What has been going on?
Right time, right place.
Forgotten for many years, there's recently been much activity in the Gardens.
The Royal Borough of Greenwich parks team have set about with vigour removing much of the structurally damaging trees, clearing the invasive species and planting some more ornamental flowers and plants.
Over the years, many plants have outgrown their surroundings - or have been swamped by invasive faster growing species. The large pond had become nothing more than a muddy ruin.
After pressure from many in the local community, the Royal Borough's Parks team set about rectifying much of the damage the neglect has caused;
Riney, one of the Royal Borough's contractors has also brought their apprentices and trainees to Rockliffe to learn the art of laying crazy paving.
Hadlow College, another service provider for the Royal Borough will also be using the Gardens to provide horticultural education.
The future
Members of the local community are coming together to help ensure the future of the gardens for the next generation of insect explorers and bird watchers.
Greenwich Council have plans for a 'phase 2' of works. This will include resurfacing the tarmac footways, further exploration into the pond system, relaying of paving slabs on the formal terrace plus new signage.
After only a few weeks work opening out the pond and plants, a pair of Mallard Ducks found the upper pond a good place for a swim. The chorus of other birds suggests they are liking the work too.
